2. 6 M HCI is added to a solution of Ag*, Cu²+, Fe3•. A white precipitate forms. Predict which ions are present. Make sure you explain and justify your answer.
3. What reagent(s) can be used to identify and confirm Ag*, Hgz2", and Pb2+ ions?
4. List all the solid precipitates that you encounter during the experiment and their colors.
5. What is the precipitating reagent for silver ion in Step 1? Would a solution of NaCl work as well? Why or why not?
A solution may contain any of the three (Pb^2+, Ag+ and Hg2^2+) group I cations. A white precipitate is formed upon the addition of HCl. This precipitate is partially soluble in hot water and any residue dissolves upon the addition of NH4OH. Which group I ions are present? Which are absent? Which are in doubt? How would you remove all doubt?
