Concept explainers
(a)
The number of elements that compose pure water.
(a)
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
An atom is building block of matter. Atoms can combine to form molecules. Molecule is formed by two or more atoms by sharing or transferring of electrons.
Pure water is formed by combining Hydrogen and Oxygen atoms together. So, there are two elements in Pure water.
Conclusion:
Two elements compose pure water. One is Hydrogen and another is Oxygen.
(b)
The number of individual atoms to form water molecule.
(b)
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
An atom is building block of matter. Atoms combine to form molecules. Molecule is formed by two or more atoms by sharing electrons.
Water molecule is formed by combining Hydrogen and Oxygen together. When 2 Hydrogen atoms combine with an Oxygen atom, a pure water molecule is formed.
Conclusion:
In a water molecule, there are three atoms- two Hydrogen and one Oxygen.
