Gout—a condition that results in joint swelling and pain—is caused by the formation of sodium urate (NaC5H3N4O3) crystals within tendons, cartilage, and ligaments. Sodium urate precipitates out of blood plasma when uric acid levels become abnormally high. This can happen as a result of eating too many rich foods and consuming too much alcohol, which is why gout is sometimes referred to as the “disease of kings.” If the sodium concentration in blood plasma is 0.140 M and Kspfor sodium urate is

- Which of the following will affect the total amount of solute that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent? a. The solution is stirred. b. The solute is ground to fine particles before dissolving. c. The temperature changes.arrow_forwardCalculate the mass of potassium cyanide ion that must be added to 100 mL of solution to dissolve 2.0102 mol of silver cyanide, AgCN.arrow_forwardPart C - Acid-base and solubility equilibria 1. Rinse 4 regular size test tubes and a 10 mL measuring cylinder thoroughly with water. Number the test-tubes from 1 to 4 in a test tube rack. 2. Into each of test tubes 1 – 3 put a small amount of solid benzoic acid (put the same amount – about the size of a pea – in each test tube). 3. Add 2 mL (use the measuring cylinder) of water to tube 1 and shake to mix the contents. 4. Add 2 mL (measuring cylinder) of 2 M HNO, to tube 2 and shake to mix the contents. 5. Rinse the measuring cylinder with water, then use it to add 2 mL of 2 M NaOH to tube 3 and shake for about 10 seconds to mix the contents. Rinse the measuring cylinder. 6. Pour about half of the solution from tube 3 into tube 4, than add 2 mL of 2 M HNO3 to tube 4. 7. Allow the test tubes to stand for 2 or 3 minutes then record the appearance of the mixtures in each test tube. 8. Answer the questions on the results page relating to this equilibrium system. Results Test tube…arrow_forward
- Describe the KNO3 crystals formed in the solubility of KNO3 at ice temperature?arrow_forwardWhat role do buffers play in maintaining a narrow pH range in the blood?arrow_forwardA 1.00 liter solution contains 0.58 moles hypochlorous acid and 0.45 moles sodium hypochlorite . If 0.22 moles of nitric acid are added to this system, indicate whether the following statements are true or false. (Assume that the volume does not change upon the addition of nitric acid.) VA. The number of moles of HCIO will remain the same. vB. The number of moles of CIO" will decrease. vC. The equilibrium concentration of H30+ will increase. D. The pH will remain the same. vE. The ratio of [HCIO] / [CIO¯] will remain the same.arrow_forward
- When the CaSO4 is 2.4 x 10^-5 what would be the volume of H2O to dissolve .33g of CaSO4arrow_forwardTRUE OR FALSE: 1. Adding NaNO3 to a saturated solution (PbCO3) will increase the PbCO3 solubility in a solution. 2. One example of heterogenous equilibrium is sublimation of dry ice. 3. A neutral solution will be produced when NH4Cl is dissolved in H₂O.arrow_forwardDescribe the meanings of acidosis and alkalosis. How do buffers function in this system?arrow_forward
- The Effect of pH on Solubility?arrow_forwardBe sure to answer all parts. From the solubility data given, calculate the solubility products for the following compounds.
