Chapter 17, Problem 101A
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The role of solubility in the formation of kidney stones needs to be explained. The compounds found in kidney stones and their Kspvalues needs to be determined.

Concept introduction:

The solubility product of a solute depends on the nature of its dissociated ions. Lower the Ksp, the less soluble will be the solute.

Expert Solution & Answer

Answer to Problem 101A

Kidney stones consist of calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate. Since their solubility in wateris low it promotes their precipitation in urine. Their Ksp values are 2.07×10-33 and 2.7×10-9.

Explanation of Solution

Low Ksp means the compounds will precipitate more easily in urine which will facilitate the formation of kidney stones.
