No, I don’t think that the coming of modern species effected the persistence of Neanderthals. As Homo sapiens displaced the Neanderthals but the DNA tests of the fossil bone doesn’t suggest them to be of same gene pool. The skeleton found in Portugal had features of both Neanderthals and modern humans but the reason of extinct of Neanderthals is still unknown.
