Concept explainers
To explain: Reason for studying the evolution of modern humans by using mitochondrial DNA instead of nuclear DNA.
Introduction: Evolution is the change in traits of a species over generations, which is mainly dependent on the natural selection.
Explanation of Solution
Mitochondrial DNA is inherited only from the mother. It does not change much over time and humans living today have identical mitochondrial DNA. According to scientists, Allan Wilson and Rebecca Cann, this happens because the population with the most variation should be the population that has had the longest time to accumulate diversity, which as exactly the trait found in mitochondrial DNA of Africans. This study also suggested that modern man or H. sapiens evolved in Africa about 2,00,000 years ago.
Mitochondrial DNA is used to study the evolution of modern humans because unlike nuclear DNA, it does not mutate or changes very little over time.
