Summary Introduction
The ear is a sensory organ that facilitates hearing and balance. In children and adults, ear infections are very common and it is caused by bacteria or viruses. Bacterial and viral infections mainly affect the middle ear, the air-filled space behind the eardrum, which is made up of minute vibrating bones of the ear. Compared to adults, children are frequently infected with ear infections. Mostly, ear infections are painful with the buildup of fluids in the middle ear.
