Watch this video (http://openstaxcollege.org/l/neuroexam) that provides a demonstration of the neurological exam—a series of tests that can be performed rapidly when a patient is initially brought into an emergency department. The exam can be repeated on a regular basis to keep a record of how and if neurological function changes over time. In what order were the sections of the neurological exam tested in this video, and which section seemed to be left out?
To analyze:
The series of neurological tests performed and not performed in the video.
Introduction:
A neurological exam is conducted to assess which part of the central nervous system is affected by a particular neurological disease. There are five different types of such exams namely; mental status, cranial nerve exam, sensory, motor, and gait exam or the coordination exam.
Explanation of Solution
The doctor starts by asking the patient to move forward from toe to toe and then stand on the feet with eyes closed to check the coordination. The doctor starts with the gait exam. The gait test is followed by a memory game to test the mental status of the patient followed by a touching the finger to test the motor system and then a sharp and dug with a small piece, which is blunt from one and sharp from another. The reflex test is the last to be performed by hitting the joints with a hammer and observe the movement in the body parts involved. The cranial test was not performed on the patient. It is used to test the working of the cranial nerves and the associated parts.
The doctors perform the gait test to check the coordination of the body followed by the mental status test, motor test sensory test, and the reflex test. The cranial test was not performed in the video.

- A 78-year-old male presents for a hospital follow-up, post-stroke, two days ago. During the neurologic portion of the physical exam, the patient cannot feel the cotton tip of an applicator as you brush it along his left forehead, cheek, and jaw on the left side of his face. Based on this scenario and phsyical exam findings, which of the following cranial nerves is most likely affected? EXPLANATION ADDRESSING THE QUESTION ABOVE Cerebral spinal fluid is a fluid that cushions the central nervous system and provides buoyancy to and helps nourish the brain. It circulates around the surface of the brain, interior ventricles, and surface of the spinal cord and central canal of the spinal cord. CSF is created by the ependymal cells in the choroid plexus and ventricles of the brain. CSF is made up mostly of water and also includes ions, nutrients like vitamin c and protein, and can pick up waste as it circulates. CSF circulation starts in the lateral ventricle where the choroid plexus and lateral ventricle creates or secretes the CSF. The CSF then flows through the ventricular foramen into the third ventricle. At the third ventricle, the CSF then flows through the cerebral aqueduct into the fourth ventricle. Then, the CSF exits the fourth…arrow_forward
- The following image sequence represents the proper order of neurological impulse in the reflex arc. True or falsearrow_forwardWhen their second child was born, Kiko and Taka were told their baby had spina bifida and would be kept in intensive care for a week. After that time, a “shunt” would be put in. Also, immediately after the birth, an operation was performed on the infant’s lower back. The parents were told that this operation went well but that their son would always be a “little weak in the ankles.” Explain the statements in quotation marks in more informative and precise language.arrow_forwardimagine that you are a neurologist. A patient has come to you with a cognitive deficit in their ability to name objects. Describe a brain activity recording technique you would use (e.g., PET, fMRI) and the brain area you would focus on (e.g., occipital lobe, temporal lobe) to determine if they have brain damage in an area that is important for this ability. You must name and describe the specific recording technique.arrow_forward

Parkinson's disease is typically diagnosed before 40 years of age. It is possible to reverse the effects of Parkinson's disease. The loss of neurons is often accompanied by the necrosis of astrocytes and an increase in microglia. Brain imaging typically shows degeneration of neurons in the temporal lobe.arrow_forwardWhen removing cerebrospinal fluid during a spinal tap, the needle is inserted below L2.
