Chapter 16, Problem 16PIAT
Summary Introduction

To review:

Write a paragraph using the information provided in the case study for proving that animal models are crucial for important discoveries regarding human biology.

Introduction:

Skin color is often one of the first traits people notice in each other. Studies in zebra fish uncovered a mutation that altered a transport protein and resulted in light-colored fish. This discovery led to the finding that the same gene in humans has a strong influence on skin pigmentation in many populations. Some government officials questioned that research dollars intended to answer questions about human biology should be on human studies.

Zebrafish were studied for skin color, which is the first trait to be noticed by the majority of people toward each other. The studies revealed mutation that altered the transport protein and caused the production of light-colored fish.

What are ethical concerns in using animals for research? Select all that apply: - many animals can be studied at one time - animals cannot consent to being used in experiments - some animals may have adverse reactions - animals are ideal biological modes for experiments
New things to investigate are continually being discovered. For example, modern medical imaging technology allowed biologists to discover structures called the "interstitium" that are now being evaluated as a new organ because of their importance in the physiology of the human body. Although they have different approaches for investigating scientific phenomena, the three types of scientific inquiry work together to help scientists understand phenomena. When something new is discovered, the first types of scientific inquiry will be                             [ Select ]                          ["hypothesis-driven experiments", "develop models/theory", "observational descriptive studies"]            . Your roommate is writing a paper on the subject of cocaine and birth defects in humans and wonders why there don’t seem to be published reports of controlled experiments in humans on the subject; all the studies are on rats! Describe to her how such a controlled experiment would have to be designed and conducted, and convince her that it would never be permitted by any responsible regulatory agency
