Explanation of Solution

Introduction:

The physical properties of the minerals describe the shape, size and appereance of the minerals. These properties depend on the temperature and composition of the minerals.

The crystal forms of the minerals are formed by the various geometric patterns of particles. The geometric pattern of single particle decides the smoothness and shape of the mineral. The geometry of the crystal form depends on the cooling rate, pressure and space. It also determines the symmetry of the crystalline structure.

The hardness is the ability of the minerals to resist the abrasion of the outer surface against weathering. It depends on the strength of the bond in the minerals.

The breaking nature of minerals describes the breaking of crystals along parallel planes of weakness within a crystal. The parallel planar directions within the mineral are called the cleavage. The cleavage decides the type and manner of the fracture.

The density of the mineral compared to density of some standard mineral is called the specific density of the mineral.

The appearance of the mineral in reflected light is called the luster.

The chemical nature of the mineral decides the appearance of the mineral and its comparison with other mineral by the color of the mineral.

Conclusion:

Thus, the physical properties of the minerals are crystal structure, hardness, cleavage tendency, luster and colour.
