Contamination of various food products is an ongoing problem all over the world. The article “Prevalence and Quantitative Detection of Salmonella in Retail Raw Chicken in Shaanxi, China” (J. of Food Production, 2013) reported the following data on the occurrence of salmonella in chicken of three different types: (1) supermarket chilled, (2) supermarket frozen, and (3) wet market fresh slaughtered.
# Salmonella Positive Samples | |||
Type | 1. | 60 | 27 |
2. | 60 | 32 | |
3. | 120 | 45 |
Does it appear that the incidence rate of salmonella occurrence depends on the type of chicken? State and test the appropriate hypotheses using a significance level of .05.

- An article describes several studies of the failure rate of defibrillators used in the treatment of heart problems. In one study conducted by the Mayo Clinic, it was reported that failures were experienced within the first 2 years by 11 of 93 patients under 50 years old and 14 of 354 patients ages 50 and older who received a particular type of defibrillator. Assume it is reasonable to regard these two samples as representative of patients in the two age groups who receive this type of defibrillator. n USE SALT (a) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the proportion of patients under 50 years old who experience a failure within the first 2 years after receiving this type of defibrillator. (Round your answers to three decimal places.) Interpret the interval. O we are 95% confident that the proportion of all patients under 50 years old who experience a failure within the first two years after receiving this type of defibrillator is within this interval. - The article "Analysis of Unwanted Fire Alarm: Case Study" (W. Chow, N. Fong, and C. Ho, Journal of Architectural Engineering, 1999:62–65) presents a count of the number of false alarms at several sites. The numbers of false alarms each month, divided into those with known causes and those with unknown causes, are given in the following table. Can you conclude that the proportion of false alarms whose cause is known differs from month to month? Month 1 2 3 7 8 9 10 11 12 4 5 6 20 13 21 26 23 18 14 10 20 20 18 14 Unknown 12 2 16 12 22 30 32 32 14 16 10 12 Knownarrow_forwardA test was conducted of two overnight mail delivery services. Two samples of identical deliveries were set up so that both delivery services were notified of the need for a delivery at the same time. The hours required to make each delivery follow. Do the data shown suggest a difference in the delivery times for the two services? Use a .05 level of significance for the test. Use Table 1 of Appendix B. One component measured was the concentration of i-Butyl alcohol. The results of the study are listed in the following table: Region i-Butyl alcohol (mg/100ml) Rhine x = 5.32, s = 2.24 Moselle 14 x = 3.62, s-0.97 (a) Assume that the underlying population variances from the two regions are identical. At the 0.05 level of significance, test the null hypothesis that the mean concentration of i-Butyl alcohol is the same for wines from the Rhine and Moselle regions. (b) Construct a 95% confidence interval for part (a). (c) Now assume that the underlying population variances from the two regions differ. At the 0.05 level of significance, test the null hypothesis that the mean concentration of i-Butyl alcohol is the same for wines from the Rhine and Moselle regions. - Answer part c,d,e and f . Please provide correct and accurate answers.arrow_forwardA study used x-ray computed tomography (CT) to collect data on brain volumes for a group of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorders and a control group of healthy persons. Sample results (in mL) are given below for total brain volumes. Use a 0.05 significance level to test the claim that there is no difference between the mean for obsessive-compulsive patients and the mean for healthy persons. Obsessive-compulsive patients: n = 10, x overbar equals 1390.03 , s = 156.84 Control group: n = 10, x overbar equals 1275.94 , s = 137.97 a. Is this association more pronounced in children with cystic fibrosis? To answer this question, 43 children (18 girls and 25 boys) attending a 2-week summer camp for cystic fibrosis patients were studied (New England Journal of Medicine, Sept. 20, 1990). Among several variables measured were the child's weight percentile (y) and the number of cigarettes smoked per day in the child's home (x). a. For the 18 girls, the coefficient of correlation between y and x was reported as r = –.50. Interpret - this result. b. Refer to part a. After using a multiple comparison procedure, the authors reported the following. 1. The difference in mean blood lead level between low-risk housing and medium-risk housing was significant. 2. The difference in mean blood lead level between low-risk housing and high-risk housing was significant. 3. The difference in mean blood lead level between medium-risk housing and high-risk housing was significant.
