Interpretation:

Structural formulas for compounds C and D should be determined in Acid-catalyzed dehydration of 2-methylcyclohexanol which gives predominantly compound C (C7 H12 ) and treatment of compound C with water in the presence of a sulfuric acid gives Compound D (C7 H14 0).

Concept Introduction:

In dehydration reaction, the organic compound undergoes in loss of water molecule. In acid-catalyzed dehydration process, alcohols are treated with strong acid catalysts,and the reaction generates alkene and water. In Hydration, an alkene or alkyne is treated with water and the product is an alcohol.
