Chapter 14, Problem 42E

Exercises 41 through 44 refer to a clinical trial named APPROVe designed to determine whether Vioxx, a medication used for arthritis and acute pain, was effective in preventing the recurrence of colorectal polyps in patients with a history of colorectal adenomas. APPROVe was conducted between 2002 and 2003 and involved 2586 participants, all of whom had a history of colorectal adenomas. The participants were randomly divided into two groups: 1287 were given 25 milligrams of Vioxx daily for the duration of the clinical trial (originally intended to last three years), and 1299 patients were given a placebo. Neither the participants nor the doctors involved in the clinical trial knew who was in which group. During the trial, 72 of the participants had cardiovascular events (mostly heart attacks or strokes). Later it was found that 46 of these people were from the group taking the Vioxx and only 26 were from the group taking the placebo. Based on these results, the clinical trial was stopped in 2003 and Vioxx was taken off the market in 2004 .

Describe the sample for APPROVe.

The fecal occult blood test, widely used both in physicians’ offices and at home to screen patients for colon and rectal cancer, examines a patient’s stool sample for blood, a condition indicating that cancer may be present. A recent study funded by the National Cancer Institute found that of 15,000 people tested on an annual basis, 10% were found to have blood in their stools. These 10% underwent further testing, including colonoscopy, the insertion of an optical-fiber tube through the rectum in order to inspect the colon and rectum visually for direct indications of cancer. Only 2.5% of those having colonoscopy actually had cancer. Additional information in the study suggests that, of the patients who were tested, approximately 5 out of 1,000 tested negative (no blood in the stool) but eventually did develop cancer. Create a probability table that shows the relationship between blood in a stool sample and colorectal cancer. Calculate P(Cancer|Blood) and P(Cancer|No Blood). The study…
In an article about unusual allergies, a doctor explained that allergy to sulfites is usually seen in patients with asthma. The typical reaction is a sudden increase in asthma symptoms after eating a food containing sulfites. Studies are performed to estimate the percentage of the nation's 10 million asthmatics who are allergic to sulfites. In one survey, 33 of 500 randomly selected asthmatics in the country were found to be allergic to sulfites. Find and interpret a 95% confidence interval for the proportion, p, of all asthmatics in the country who are allergic to sulfites.
