Concept explainers
Whether it is possible to view an elliptical shaped rainbow, if a person moves sideways from the point of site of a circular arced rainbow.
Answer to Problem 2TE
A person cannot see an elliptical segment of a rainbow by moving sideways from the point of sight of a circular arced rainbow.
Explanation of Solution
A rainbow is produced due to the reflection and dispersion of sunlight inside water drops. A rainbow has a primary as well as a secondary bow.
The rainbow is in the form of a three-dimensional cone. A rainbow is seen as a circular arc because it is formed far away from our view.
The rainbow faces us squarely. If a person moves sideways, it feels like the rainbow also moves sideways. Our horizon is changed when a person moves from one position giving the view of a different rainbow. But, the shape of the rainbow does not change.
Conclusion:
Therefore, we cannot see an elliptical segment of a rainbow by moving sideways from the point of sight of a circular arced rainbow.
