Chapter 14, Problem 29P

(a)

Summary Introduction

Interpretation:

The time period required on an average to finish the job.

Concept Introduction:

Schedule the job on the basis of the FCFS . Then determine the average flow time for the each job. Calculate the average flow time that is required to finish the each job. Then calculate the average tardiness by adding the delay time of the order.

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

The owner of an in HM Catering Company has four jobs to deliver today, shown in the order in which they are received:

    JobProcessing Time
    (hrs)
    Due (hrs)
    W45
    X39
    Y22
    Z11

Schedule the jobs based on the first come first served:

    Hours12345678910
    JobWXYZ

From the table, it is observed that the flow time of the job W is 4 hours which due in 5 hours. Thus, W has no delay in job.

The flow time of the job X is 7 hours which due in 9 hours. Thus, X has no delay in job.

The flow time of the job Y is 9 hours which due in 2 hours. Thus, X has 7 hours delay in job.

In order of the job Y :

The flow time of the job Z is 10 hours which due in 1 hour. Thus, it has a delay of 9 hours.

In order of the job Z :

Thus, calculate the average flow time that is required to finish the each job:

  4hours+7hours+9hours+10hours4=7.5hours

Now, calculating the average tardiness, adding the delay time of the order and divide it by the number of the orders;

  AT=0+0+7+94AT=4hours

(b)

Summary Introduction

Interpretation:

The job that will be late and the average job tardiness.

Concept Introduction:

Schedule the job on the basis of the SPT . Then determine the average flow time for the each job. Calculate the average flow time that is required to finish the each job. Then calculate the average tardiness by adding the delay time of the order.

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

The owner of an in home meal catering company has four jobs to deliver today, shown in the order in which they are received:

    JobProcessing Time
    (hrs)
    Due (hrs)
    W45
    X39
    Y22
    Z11

Schedule the jobs based on the SPT ,

    Hours12345678910
    JobZYXW

From the table, it can be observed that Z has the 1 hour flow time which due in 1 hour. Z will be deliver on time.

Y has the 3 hour flow time which due in 2 hour. Y will be delay 1 hour of the job.

X has the 6 hour flow time which due in 9 hour. There will be no delay in order of the job X .

W has the 10 hours flow time which due in 5 hours. Thus, there is delay of 5 hours on job order of W

Thus, calculate the average flow time that is required to finish the each job:

  1hours+3hours+6hours+10hours4=4hours

Now, calculating the average tardiness, adding the delay time of the order and divide it by the number of the orders;

  AT=0+1+0+54AT=1.5hours

Summary Introduction

Interpretation:

The job that will be late and the average job tardiness.

Concept Introduction:

Schedule the job on the basis of the EDD . Then determine the average flow time for the each job. Calculate the average flow time that is required to finish the each job. Then calculate the average tardiness by adding the delay time of the order.

Summary Introduction

Interpretation:

The most efficient sequence from the FCFS,SPT,EDD .

Concept Introduction:

The efficiency can be measured as the average tardiness or the number of jobs delayed and the average flow time.

    JobProcessing Time

    Due (hrs)
    W45
    X39
    Y22
    Z11

The efficiency can be measured as the average tardiness or the number of jobs delayed and the average flow time.

Average flow time:

By comparing the average flow time, it is observed that SPT method gives the lowest average flow time.

Average tardiness:

By comparing the average tardiness, it is observed that EDD method gives the lowest average tardiness.

Number of jobs delayed:

Both FCFS and SPT have the lower number of the jobs delayed as compared to the EDD method.

Therefore, it depends on the owner which gives the priority to the most efficient method will vary.

Thomas has four assignments due in class tomorrow, and his class times are as follows.      Class  Time  Marketing 304  8 am  OM 385  10 am  Finance 216  2 pm  Psychology  4:30 pm      Each class lasts one hour, and Thomas has no other classes. It is now midnight, and Thomas estimates that the marketing, OM, finance, and psychology assignments will take him six, three, four, and two hours, respectively.    Use the Excel Sequencing template to determine how he should schedule the work. Can he complete all of it on time?  (Hint: Using SPT and EDD. First, convert times to due dates past midnight).
De Law Construction has a gotten some construction jobs to build some starter housing units in a few areas. The building time for each housing unit to be completed as well as the date that each unit is to be completed is shown in the table below. Today is Day 471. Which of the sequences, EDD OR SPT should the company use to sequence the order in which they do the jobs, assuming that because of resource constraints it cannot do the jobs simultaneously?   HOUSING UNIT Building Time (days) Due Date Marabella 39 Day 502 Tabaquite 23 Day 528 San Juan 30 Day 515 Mayaro 33 Day 498 D’Abadie 41 Day 535 Preysal 40 Day 510       Some time after starting the jobs according to the sequence you decided on, it was found that because of inclement weather the last three housing units in the sequence have been delayed. You now have to prioritise  and decide in which order to expedite those three jobs, using the Critical Ratio model. It is now…

Activity Time (minutes) A. Property survey 24 B. Credit report 19 C. Title search 18 D. Final decision 20 The office has three employees, activities A, B and C are combined together and assigned to two employees, while the other employee is responsible for the last activity D. Under this setting, what would be the maximum number of loan applications the office can process per day? Numbers only, keep three decimals if not exact, either round up or down is ok
