Chapter 14, Problem 18TYK
Summary Introduction
To explain:
In what way the murky waters of Lake Victoria might be contributing to the decline in cichlid species and also how it is affecting the formation of new species.
Concept introduction:
The hybrid zone is an overlapping region where the two different species mate and reproduce offspring (hybrid). There can be three outcomes of a hybrid zone, namely reinforcement, fusion and stability. The fusion occurs when the reproductive barriers are not strong between the two species. As a result, gene flow occurs greatly between two species leading to their fusion into one species. It is the reverse of

Landings of blue crab plummeted in 2002 and 2003, as five years of drought and greatly reduced freshwater flow from underground aquifers led to increased salinity in coastal estuaries. These habitats between open ocean and fresh water are “nurseries” for many marine animals. Speculate about possible causes for the decline in shrimp and blue crab populations.arrow_forward
