Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The oxidation number of nitrogen, chlorine and aluminum has to be calculated. Also the oxidizing and reducing agent of the reaction has to be identified.
Concept introduction:
Oxidation Number:
Oxidation number defined as the extent of oxidation of an atom in a compound. Oxidation is the loss of electrons. Oxidation number can be positive, negative or zero.
Oxidizing agent:
Compound which oxidize another substance but reduce itself called oxidizing agent. Oxidizing agent takes electrons.
Reducing agent:
Compound which reduce another substance but oxidize itself called reducing agent. Reducing agent gives electrons.
(b)
Interpretation:
The heated released per gram of the reactants has to be calculated.
