The two opposing effects that histone modifications may have with regard to transcription.

Introduction:

Histone modification exerts its effects via two mechanisms; by influencing the structure of chromatin and by regulating the binding of effector molecules. Both these effects eventually affect the transcription process. Because the change in the overall structure of chromatin leads to less compact structure which facilitates the DNA to give access to other proteins such as those involved in transcription.
