Answer to Problem 15R

Two main types of bulbs that are found in home: Incandescent light bulbs and Fluorescent light bulbs.

Explanation of Solution

Introduction:Light is a type of wave that carries energy through matter or space. Any device used for irradiation, illumination, projection or signalling are known as lighting device.

Many light bulbs in home produce incandescent light. This light is produced by heating a piece of metal (tungsten) until it glows. In incandescent light bulbs, there is a small wire coil (known as filament, made up of tungsten). When electric current reaches to this filament, an electric resistance of tungsten causes the filament to become hot and because of this, incandescent light bulb blows.

Fluorescent light bulbs are also used in house. Fluorescent light is light produced by using phosphorus to convert UV radiations to visible light.

Conclusion:

Incandescent light bulbs. When the filament of bulb is heated (by the electric resistance of tungsten), it produces light.

Fluorescent light bulbs. After converting the UV radiations into visible lights (by using phosphorus) fluorescent light is produced.
