Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The mechanism for the given reaction is to be determined. The compound that reacts at the fastest and the slowest rates are to be determined. The rate ratio of the most reactive to the least reactive is to be calculated.
Concept introduction:
A positive value of reaction constant indicates that the transition state has more negative charge than the reactant. This transition state will be stabilized by electron withdrawing substituents. Electron withdrawing substituents will increase the reaction rate while electron donating substituents will decrease the reaction rate.

- The enzyme urease increases the rate of urea hydrolysis at pH 8.0 and 20 °C by a factor of 1014. Suppose that a given quantity of urease can completely hydrolyze a given quantity of urea in 19 minutes at pH 8.0 and 20 °C. How long would it take for this amount of urea to be hydrolyzed in the absence of urease at the same temperature and pH in sterile conditions?
