Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The result when the stopcock between two bulbs containing chlorine gas and nitrogen gas is opened must be explained.
Concept introduction:
As per Graham’s gas diffusion law, rate of diffusion of a gas in inversely proportional to the square root of the molecular weight of the gas.
Answer to Problem 50A
Nitrogen gas will move more towards the bulb containing chlorine gas.
Explanation of Solution
Molar mass of nitrogen and chlorine gases are 28 and 71 respectively.
Thus ratio of diffusion rate of N2:Cl2
As diffusion rate of nitrogen is 1.6 times faster as compared to chlorine gas, so nitrogen gas will reach to the bulb containing chlorine gas.
Nitrogen gas will diffuse more towards the chlorine gas.
