Answer to Problem 36A

On the basis of kinetic molecular theory, gas particles are easily compressed due to small volume while random motion enables gases to expand if pressure is not considered.

Explanation of Solution

Compression and expansion is the change in volume with respect to pressure which is given by the ideal gas equation. This equation is given by formula as follows:

p=nRTV

Here, p is pressure, V is volume, n is number of moles and T temperature. In expansion, the gas expanded at room temperature. The pressure decreases when compression takes place but it increases in expansion. Also, volume of the compressed gas is less than the expanded gas.
