Introduction:

Resting membrane potential is when the inside potential of the cell's membrane is negative, that is, −70 mV (millivolt). When the resting membrane potential becomes more negative, hyperpolarization occurs and when the resting membrane potential becomes less negative, depolarization occurs. This hyperpolarization or depolarization causes the graded potential to occur. Thus, the graded potential means any change or deviation from the resting membrane potential.
