Explanation of Solution

The reasons for the workers to form unions in the late 1800s are explained below:

  1. Low wages: As companies became bigger in the late 1800's, the company owners lost touch with the people who worked for them. Most of the people who worked for them will probably never have known the owners of big factories. They had a little concern with their employee’s issues. Most big business owners were preoccupied with making good money. Owners tried to make as little money as possible for their employees.
  2. Unsafe working conditions: As industrialization grew and the machinery employed by the workers became more efficient, more risky was work. In industrial accidents thousands of workers were killed each year, and hundreds and thousands of workers were injured. Staff was also expected to work long hours. Some railroad employees were forced to work more than 40 hours before they got any rest. It caused further incidents.
Economics Concept Introduction

Introduction: A labor union, also known as a trade union or workers union, is an association that represents employee mutual interests. Labor unions are helping employees mobilize to negotiate salaries, hours, benefits and other working conditions with employers. They are also unique to the industry and tend to be more prevalent in manufacturing, mining, construction, transport, and the public sector.
