Exercises 49-54 deal with sickle cell anemia, an inherited disease in which red blood cells become distorted and deprived of oxygen. Approximately 1 in every 500 African-American infants is born with the disease; only 1 in 160,000 white infants has the disease. A person with two sickle cell genes will have the disease, but a person with only one sickle cell gene will have a mild, nonfatal anemia called sickle cell trait. (Approximately 8%-10% of the African-American population has this trait.)

If we use s to represent a sickle cell gene and S a healthy gene, the above table shows the four possibilities for the children of two Ss parents. Each parent has only one sickle cell gene, so each has the relatively mild sickle cell trait. Find the probability that these parents give birth to a child who
is healthy.

- Measles is a highly contagious infection of the respiratory system and is caused by a virus. Despite the fact that more than 80% of the world’s population is vaccinated for it, measles remains the fifth leading cause of death worldwide. In general, the term pathogenesis refers to the way a disease originates and develops over time. In the case of measles, the virus enters through the respiratory tract and replicates there before spreading into the bloodstream and then the skin.Figure 1: Shown is a transmission electron micrograph of a measles virus.1The measles pathogenesis function used to model the development of the disease is given by the following equation: f (t) = −t(t − 21)(t + 1) (2)where t is measured in days and f (t) represents the number of infected cells per milliliter [mL] of plasma. What is the peak infection time for the measles virus? Solve the above problem through the following steps:(a) Expand equation 2 fully. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health Antibiotic resistance occurs when disease-causing microbes no longer respond to antibiotic drug therapy. Because such resistance is typically genetic and transferred to the next generations of microbes, it is a very serious public health problem. Gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported notifiable disease in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 27% of gonorrhea cases tested in 2010 were resistant to at least one of the three major antibiotics commonly used to treat this sexually transmitted disease.3 A physician treated 10 cases of gonorrhea at some point in 2010. What is the distribution of cases resistant to at least one of the three major antibiotics? What is the probability that exactly 1 out of the 10 cases was resistant to at least one of the three major antibiotics? What is the probability that exactly 2 out of 10…arrow_forwardSuppose a birth defect has a recessive form of inheritance. In a study population, the recessive gene (a) initially has aprevalence of 25%. A subject has the birth defect if bothmaternal and paternal genes are of type a. A further study finds that after 10 generations (≈200 years)a lot of inbreeding has taken place in the population. Twosubpopulations (populations A and B), consisting of 30%and 70% of the general population, respectively, haveformed. Within population A, prevalence of the recessivegene is 40%, whereas in population B it is 10%. Suppose that a baby is born with a birth defect, but the baby’s ancestry is unknown. What is the posteriorprobability that the baby will have both parents from population A, both parents from population B, or mixed ancestry, respectively? (Hint: Use Bayes’ rule.)arrow_forward
- The 2019-2020 flu season was especially tough.By the end of the season, an estimated total of 49 million people in the United States had contracted the flu, of whom an estimated 79,000 died from the flu. Assume that the US population was 300,000,000 during the 2019-2020 flu season and that during the season, a total of 2.9 million Americans died from all causes (including the flu). Assume the population of the US remained the same at the midpoint of the season. Report mortality rates per 100,000. Be sure to express the measure in the correct format. c.What was the flu-related mortality rate during the 2019-2020 flu season? d.What is the all-cause mortality rate during the 2019-2020 flu season? e.In a country with an age distribution that is much younger than in the US, the proportionate mortality rate from flu in 2019 was 5%. Based on this information alone, can we determine that the risk of dying from flu in 2019 was higher in this country compared to the US? - A rodentologist investigating various aspects of the aging process wanted to see whether staying “lean and mean” that is, being under normal body weight would lengthen life span. She randomly assigned newborn rats from a highly inbred line to one of three diets: (1) unlimited access to food, (2) 90% of the amount of food that a rat of that size would normally eat, (3) 80% of the amount of food that a rat of that size would normally eat. She maintained the rats on the three diets throughout their lives and recorded their life spans (in years).
