To determine:
The reason that scientist think the discovered prokaryote might be archaeal.
Introduction:
Fundamentally in nature there are two different types of cells prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic cells are small in size. The average size is
To determine:
The way in which it can be proved that it is not bacterial.
Introduction:
Bacteria and archaea comes under prokaryotes which are living, fully functional and single celled organisms. Initially the domain Archaea was considered to be unique group of bacteria but in 1977 the Archaea came to be viewed as distinctive domain that distinguishes from bacteria on the basis of their biochemical characteristics.

- Some prokaryotes, especially archaea, are capable of living in extreme environments, such as deep-sea vents, where temperatures can reach 80°C (176°F). Few organisms can survive at this temperature. What adaptations might archaea possess that allow them to survive in such extreme heat?arrow_forwardIn 1985, a 0.5-mm cell was discovered in surgeonfish and named Epulopiscium fishelsoni. It was presumed to be a protozoan. In 1993, researchers determined that Epulopiscium is actually a gram-positive bacterium. Why do you suppose this organism was initially identified as a protozoan?arrow_forward What were the earliest forms of life on Earth? Who developed postulates to identify disease-causing organisms? What percent of bacteria and archaea cannot be cultured? Describe the viable-but-not-culturable state of prokaryotes. Describe planktonic prokaryotes. Why do biofilms form? What holds biofilms together? Structure of Prokaryotes Describe the nucleoid. Describe conjugation. What happens during binary fission? What are cell walls of prokaryotes primarily composed of? What structure of Archaea is different from other domains of life? What is the Bacteria division into two groups based on? - Prokaryotes are classified by their shape and their cell arrangement. Identify the bacteria in the picture below. * Bacillus Coccus Spirochete Vibrioarrow_forwardEndospores are a) resistant to extreme temperatures b) produced by some prokaryotes c) can survive for decades d) all of the abovearrow_forwardIt is 0.4 um in length, but that is all you know. What could you do to determine if this microbe was a bacteria or an archaea?arrow_forward
- Microbiologists have announced the discovery of over 30 new species of bacteria that thrive between the teeth and gums of humans. The bacteria could not be grown in the researcher's laboratories, nor were any of them ever observed via and kind of microscopy. If they couldn't culture them or see them, how could the researchers know they discovered a new species? If they couldn't examine the cells for the presence of a nucleus, how did they determine that the organisms were prokaryotes and not eukaryotes?arrow_forwardProkaryotes are classified by their shape and their cell arrangement.
