Cheadle Company purchased a fleet of 20 delivery trucks for $8,000 each on January 2, 2019. It decided to use composite depreciation on a straight-line basis and calculated the depreciation from the following schedule: 1. Prepare the journal entries necessary to record the preceding events. 2. Assume that the company expected all the trucks to last 4 years and be retired for $1,600 each. Using group depreciation, prepare journal entries for all 6 years, assuming the company retired the trucks as shown by the latter schedule.
Martin Corporation acquired a truck on January 1, 2016, at a cost of $84,000. The truck was
originally estimated to have a salvage value of $4,000 and an estimated useful life of 8 years.
Depreciation had been recorded through December 31, 2018, using the straight-line method. On
January 1, 2019, the estimated salvage value was revised to $6,000, and the useful life was
revised to a total of 7 years.
Required:
(Show all calculations)
Calculate the annual depreciation expense for the years 2016 through 2018.
a.
b.
Calculate the book value of the truck at December 31, 2018.
с.
Calculate the depreciation expense per year after revision.
d.
If the truck is sold at a gain, how is the statement of financial position affected?
On January 1, 2018, World Inc. purchased five machines at a cost of $14,000 each. The company adopted the group (straight-line) depreciation method, using an eight-year life with a $2,800 salvage value per machine. Correct depreciation was recorded in 2016 and 2017. On January 1, 2020, one of the machines was sold for $6,500. On January 3, 2020, a new unrelated piece of equipment was purchased for $15,000 with no salvage value and a six-year life. It will be depreciated using the straight-line method.
Required:
Prepare appropriate journal entries for
a.
January 1, 2020
b.
December 31, 2020, to record depreciation expense

If one of the cars is sold at the beginning of the second year for 7,000, what journal entry is required?arrow_forwardColquhoun International purchases a warehouse for $300,000. The best estimate of the salvage value at the time of purchase was $15,000, and it is expected to be used for twenty-five years. Colquhoun uses the straight-line depreciation method for all warehouse buildings. After four years of recording depreciation, Colquhoun determines that the warehouse will be useful for only another fifteen years. Calculate annual depreciation expense for the first four years. Determine the depreciation expense for the final fifteen years of the assets life, and create the journal entry for year five.arrow_forwardKam Company purchased a machine on January 2, 2019, for 20,000. The machine had an expected life of 8 years and a residual value of 300. The double-declining-balance method of depreciation is used. Required: 1. Compute the depreciation expense for each year of the assets life and book value at the end of each year. 2. Assuming that the company has a policy of always changing to the straight-line method at the midpoint of the assets life, compute the depreciation expense for each year of the assets life. 3. Assuming that the company always changes to the straight-line method at the beginning of the year when the annual straight-line amount exceeds the double-declining-balance amount, compute the depreciation expense for each year of the assets life.arrow_forward
- Grandorf Company replaced the engine in a truck for 8,000 and expects the new engine will extend the life of the truck two years beyond the original estimated life. Related information is provided below. Cost of truck 65,000 Salvage value 5,000 Original estimated life 6 years The truck was purchased on January 1, 20-1. The engine was replaced on January 1, 20-6. The building had an estimated life of 20 years and an estimated residual value of 20,000. The company has been depreciating the building using straight-line depreciation. At the beginning of 2020, the following independent situations occur: a. The company estimates that the building has a remaining life of 10 years (for a total of 16 years). b. The company changes to the sum-of-the-years-digits method. c. The company discovers that it had ignored the estimated residual value in the computation of the annual depreciation each year. Required: For each of the independent situations, prepare all journal entries related to the building for 2020. Ignore income taxes.arrow_forwardMontello Inc. purchases a delivery truck for $25,000. The truck has a salvage value of $6,000 and is expected to be driven for 125,000 miles. Montello uses the units-of-production depreciation method, and in year one it expects to use the truck for 26,000 miles. Calculate the annual depreciation expense.arrow_forward
- Montezuma Inc. purchases a delivery truck for $15,000. The truck has a salvage value of $3,000 and is expected to be driven for eight years. Montezuma uses the straight-line depreciation method. Calculate the annual depreciation expense.
