Answer to Problem 4RAT

The correct option for the statement “A magnetic force acting on a beam of electrons can change its” is option (a).

Explanation of Solution

A magnetic field can interact with a moving charged particle if it moves in the magnetic field in any direction which is not parallel to the direction of the magnetic field lines. The magnetic field interacts to produce a magnetic force which is perpendicular to the direction of motion of the particle. Hence the magnetic force cannot do work to move the charged particles. However the perpendicular force causes a change in direction of motion of the particle.

Here, the beam of electrons can be redirected under the action of a magnetic force if the direction of the beam is not parallel to the magnetic field. Thus, there is a change in the direction. The energy of the beam of electrons does not change because the magnetic force acts perpendicular to the motions of the electrons doing no work.

Conclusion:

Therefore, the correct option for the statement “A magnetic force acting on a beam of electrons can change its” is option (a).
