Chapter 11, Problem 34QP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The consequences of thermal pollution of water related to oxygen solubility and its effect on the life of fish are to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

Solubility is the property of a substance in its solid, or liquid, or gaseous state called solute to dissolve in a liquid (also in solid or gas) called the solvent.

The solubility of any substance can be explained by the intermolecular force of attraction between the solute and solvent.

The more the intermolecular force of attraction between solute and solvent, more will be the solubility of the solute.

Normally the gases are nonpolar and water is a polar molecule. Thus, water contains a small amount of dissolved oxygen.
