Chapter 10.3, Problem 16AYU

Effects of Plastic Resin Para-nonylphenol is found in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) used in the food processing and packaging industries. Researchers wanted to determine the effect this substance had on the organ weight of first-generation mice when both parents were exposed to 50 micrograms per liter (μg/L) of para-nonylphenol in drinking water for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, the mice were bred. After 100 days, the offspring of the exposed parents were sacrificed and the kidney weights were determined. The mean kidney weight of the 12 offspring was found to be 396.9 milligrams (mg), with a standard deviation of 45.4 mg. Is there significant evidence to conclude that the kidney weight of the offspring whose parents were exposed to 50 μg/L of para-nonylphenol in drinking water for 4 weeks is greater than 355.7 mg, the mean weight of kidneys in normal 100-day-old mice at the α = 0.05 level of significance?

radon is a colorless, odorless gas that is naturally released by rocks and soils and may concentrate in tightly closed houses. because radon is slightly radioactive, there is some concern that it may be a health hazard. radon detectors are sold to homeowners worried about this risk, but the detectors may be inaccurate. university researchers placed 12 detectors in a chamber where they were exposed to 105 picocuries per liter (pci/l) of radon over 3 years. here are the readings given by the detectors:91.9 97.8 111.4 112.3 105.4 85.0 103.8 89.6 96.6 109.3 104.8 91.7 Assume (unrealistically) that you know that the standard deviation of readings for all detectors of this type is σ = 9. a. Give the 95% confidence interval for the mean reading μ for this type of detector. b. Is there significant evidence at the 5% level that the mean reading differs from the true value 105? State hypotheses and base a test on your confidence interval from (a). c. Calculate the power of this test against the…
In an experimental study, it was noticed that people who eat more leafy, green vegetables tend to get better sleep than the general population. Researchers wonder whether the improved sleep might be caused by the minerals potassium and magnesium found in leafy, green vegetables. How could the researchers design an experiment to determine the effects of potassium and magnesium on sleep?
DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) was used extensively from 1940 to 1970 as an insecticide. It still sees limited use for control of disease. But DDT was found to be harmful to plants and animals, including humans, and its effects were found to be lasting. The amount of time that DDT remains in the environment depends on many factors, but the following table shows what can be expected of 200 kilograms of DDT that has seeped into the soil. t = time in yearssince application D = DDT remaining, kilograms 0 200.00 1 190.00 2 180.50 3 171.48 (a) Show that the data are exponential. The ratio from year 0 to year 1 is ______ , from year 1 to year 2 is ____ , and from year 2 to year 3 is_____  (rounded to two decimal places). Because these successive ratios are all , a) different b)the same , the data are exponential.
