Concept explainers
To determine: Whether a woman can have X-linked red-green color blindness.
Introduction: Colorblindness (red-green colorblindness) is color vision deficiency and colorblind individuals have different color perception. They have difficulty in seeing red, blue, green or a combination of these colors. Gene expression in human body is required to form photopigments. The defects in these genes can cause colorblindness. It is a recessive X-linked condition.
To draw: A three-generation pedigree of a woman with red-green color blindness with her normal husband and determine the odds that this woman’s sons will be color-blind and her children would be carriers for color-blindness.
Introduction: A pedigree depicts the interrelationships between parents and offspring over generations for a particular trait. It is also referred to as family tree. The individuals and relations are denoted by symbols and lines. It contributes in predicting the occurrence of that trait in future generations through inheritance patterns and genotyping the individuals. Colorblindness (red-green colorblindness) is a recessive X-linked condition.
