Concept explainers
To explain:
The reason for gene linkage to be an exception to the law of independent assortment
Introduction:
Mendel developed the law of independent assortment which states that a random distribution of genes occur during gamete formation. Genes on separate chromosomes sort independently during meiosis.
Answer to Problem 29A
Linked genes do not segregate independently during meiosis. So they are an exception to the law of independent assortment as a linked gene is not assorted independent of other genes. Linked genes travel together during gamete formation.
Explanation of Solution
According to the law of independent assortment different genes separate independently from each other during the formation of reproductive cells or gametes.
Gens that are located close to each other on the same chromosome are said to be linked. Many experiments have confirmed that linked genes travel together during meiosis. The linkage of genes on a chromosome is an exception to the law of independent assortment because linked genes do not segregate independently. They tend to travel together when crossing over occurs and they are expressed together.
