Concept explainers
To explain:
How photosynthesis could be affected by decrease in concentration of CO2 in a greenhouse.
Introduction:
Photosynthesis is an anabolic pathway in which light energy from the Sun is converted to chemical energy for use by the cell. Light energy is trapped by pigments called chlorophyll present in the chloroplasts and is converted to chemical energy during the process of photosynthesis.
Answer to Problem 12STP
If the concentration of carbon dioxide is decreased in a greenhouse, the rate of photosynthesis would also decrease. This would lead to decline in overall growth and development of plants.
Explanation of Solution
Photosynthesis is a process in which carbon dioxide is converted to sugar through carbon fixation. Carbon dioxide is an essential ingredient for photosynthesis to occur. If the level of CO2 in a greenhouse is decreased, it will have an impact on the overall health of the plants. The low level of CO2 will decrease the rate of photosynthesis and so the plants will not have sufficient carbohydrate to get energy for other activities. The overall growth and development would decline and the plants would become weak.
