Textbook Question
Chapter 10, Problem 27QP
Break-Even Replacement [LO2] The previous two problems suggest that using CFLs is a good idea from a purely financial perspective unless you live in an area where power is relatively inexpensive, but there is another wrinkle. Suppose you have a residence with a lot of incandescent bulbs that are used on average 500 hours a year. The average bulb will be about halfway through its life, so it will have 500 hours remaining (and you can’t tell which bulbs are older or newer). At what cost per kilowatt-hour docs it make sense to replace your incandescent bulbs today?

Problem 10-28 Equivalent Annual Cost [LO4]
Light emitting diodes (LED) light bulbs have become required in recent years, but do
they make financial sense? Suppose a typical 60-watt incandescent light bulb costs $.48
and lasts 1,000 hours. A 15-watt LED, which provides the same light, costs $3.55 and
lasts for 12,000 hours. A kilowatt-hour of electricity costs $.124. A kilowatt-hour is 1,000
watts for 1 hour. If you require a return of 10 percent and use a light fixture 500 hours per
year, what is the equivalent annual cost of each light bulb? (A negative answer should
be indicated by a minus sign. Do not round intermediate calculations and round your
answers to 2 decimal places, e.g., 32.16.)

5. Branton Electric is considering the purchase of an entire cargo container filled with
upgraded utility meters for $20,000. Branton can charge $50 for the installation of each
upgraded meter, while the actual cost of the installation would be only $15. How many
utility meter upgrades are necessary for Branton Electric to break even on this
purchase? (Quick Start #16)
6. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a conservative strategy of Capacity
versus an Aggressive strategy?
3. Scenario Analysis [LO2] Sloan Transmissions, Inc.,
has the following estimates for its new gear assembly project:
Price = $1,440 per unit; variable costs = $460 per unit; fixed
$3.9 million; quantity = 85,000 units. Suppose the
company believes all of its estimates are accurate only to
within ±15 percent. What values should the company use for
the four variables given here when it performs its best-case
scenario analysis? What about the worst-case scenario?

The sausage system will save the firm $155,000 per year in pretax operating costs, and the system requires an initial investment in net working capital of $29,000. Cost-Cutting Proposals [LO2] Tanaka Machine Shop is considering a four-year project to improve its production efficiency. Buying a new machine press for $445,000 is estimated to result in $160,000 in annual pretax cost savings. The press falls in the MACRS five-year class, and it will have a salvage value at the end of the project of $40,000. The press also requires an initial investment in spare parts inventory of $20,000, along with an additional $2,800 in inventory for each succeeding year of the project. If the shop's tax rate is 22 percent and its discount rate is 9 percent, should the company buy and install the machine press?arrow_forward

The pipeline's operating costs are negligible, and it is expected to last for a very long time. Unfortunately, the volume of oil shipped is declining, and cash flows are expected to decline by 4% per year. The discount rate is 10%. a. What is the PV of the pipeline's cash flows if its cash flows are assumed to last forever? b. What is the PV of the cash flows if the pipeline is scrapped after 20 years?arrow_forward2. As information becomes increasingly available additional storage is needed for the handling of client's insurance capacities. Short Stop is looking to modernise the hardware in which they store the data. Under the proposed idea, Short Stop would purchase dedicated virtual servers and cloud storage which costs $50,000 per year, indefinitely, from the end of year 2 onward (as it takes a year to implement this change). If implemented this would result in an immediate cost saving of $500,000. Short Stop has estimated that it could invest this money elsewhere, as an alternative, at 8% p.a. From a business perspective describe the concept of time value of money in such a way that your description sheds light on how businesses come to financial investment decisions or how investments today can be valued in the future. - Solve for LO3 21. (LO3 20 for data / Do not solve) LO3 20. Sensitivity Analysis We are evaluating a project that costs $1.68 million, has a six-year life, and has no salvage value. Assume that depreciation is straight-line to zero over the life of the project. Sales are projected at 90,000 units per year. Price per unit is $37.95, variable cost per unit is $23.20, and fixed costs are $815,000 per year. The tax rate is 21 percent, and we require a return of 11 percent on this project. a. Calculate the base-case cash flow and NPV. What is the sensitivity of NPV to changes in the sales figure? Explain what your answer tells you about a 500-unit decrease in projected sales. b. What is the sensitivity of OCF to changes in the variable cost figure? Explain what your answer tells you about a $1 decrease in estimated variable costs. LO3 21.
