Chapter 1, Problem 92FP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The working of a Galileo thermometer needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
A Galileo thermometer consists of a sealed glass cylinder. The glass cylinder contains a clear liquid and number of glass containers with different densities.
The different containers rise or fall depending on their densities and the density of the surrounding liquid that changes with the change in temperature.

Suppose that you want to know whether you could lift a gallon of liquid mercury. One gallon is 3780 mL and mercury has a specific gravity of 13.55. What is the mass of that gallon of Hg?
To identify a liquid substance, a student determined itsdensity. Using a graduated cylinder, she measured out a 45-mLsample of the substance. She then measured the mass of thesample, finding that it weighed 38.5 g. She knew that the substancehad to be either isopropyl alcohol 1density 0.785 g>mL2or toluene 1density 0.866 g>mL2. What are the calculated densityand the probable identity of the substance?
Put (√) or (×), then correct if false:-
i) In gas phase, the molecules are held close together ( ).
ii)Viscosity is one of the chemical properties of the matter ( ).
iii)Hour is the SI unite of the time ( ).
iv) Specific gravity = (d water) /( d substance) ( ).
