Concept explainers
You receive orders to sail due east for 24.5 mi to put your salvage ship directly over a sunken pirate ship. However, when your divers probe the ocean floor at that location and find no evidence of a ship, you radio back to your source of information, only to discover that the sailing distance was supposed to be 24.5 nautical miles, not regular miles. Use the Length table in Appendix D to calculate how far horizontally you are from the pirate ship in kilometers.

- A house is advertised as having 1 420 square feet under its roof. What is area in square meters? Your friend is between the skyscraper and yourself. The angle of elevation from your position to the top of the skyscraper is 42 degrees. The angle of elevation from your friend's position to the top of the skyscraper is 71 degrees. How far are you from your friend? Express your answer using the correct number of significant figures.arrow_forwardA rover on Mars leaves Station A and travels 18 km due south to sample rocks at Outcrop B. It then adjusts its course 74° westward. It travels 62 km in that direction until it reaches Deposit C to sample soil. What angle θ with respect to due west could the rover have used to travel directly from Station A to Deposit C? Carry intermediate computations to four decimal places. Round to the nearest tenth of a degree.arrow_forward
- A plane is flying at a speed of 320 miles per hour on a bearing of N65°E. Its ground speed is 390 miles per hour and its true course, given by the direction angle of the ground speed vector, is 30°. Find the speed, in miles per hour, and the direction angle, in degrees, of the wind. The speed of the wind is miles per hour. (Do not round until the final answer. Then round to the nearest tenth as needed.)arrow_forwardA car is driving on a circular track with a radius of 1 (km). In the point in south (sin((3π)/2)) on the field is a radar meter. At a given time, the car is 1/2 km from the radar meter (in air measurement)and the distance between the car and the meter increases by 50 km / h. How fast driving the car north? (hint: the car will also have an east / west movement, but here it is only asked about the north / south movement)arrow_forwardYou are working at a radar station for the Coast Guard. While everyone else is out to lunch, you hear a distress call from a sinking ship. The ship is located at a distance of 51.2km from the station, at a bearing of 36° west of north. On your radar screen you see the location of four other ships as follows: Quick! Which ship do you contact to help the sinking ship? Ship number one has a distance from station at 36.1km at a bearing of 42° west of north, at maximum speed of 30.0km/h. The ship number two has a distance of 37.3km at a bearing of 61° west of North, at maximum speed of 38.0km/h. The ship number three has a distance from station 10.0km at a bearing of 36° west of North at a maximum speed of 32.0km/h. The ship number four has a distance from station 51.2km at a bearing 79° west of North at maximum speed of 45.0km/h. Which ship will get there in the shortest time interval? Assume that each ship would accelerate quickly to its maximum speed and then maintain that constant speed…arrow_forward
- You go on a hike with some friends. First, you travel 1.7 miles in a direction due west. Then, you spend some time checking Twitter and not paying attention to where you're walking. Once you look back up from your phone, you are at a ranger station that is 2.1 miles in a direction 27 degrees west of north from your starting point. How far, and in what direction, did you travel while checking Twitter?arrow_forwardYou are driving south along the shore of the Mississippi River. At this point it is flowing due South. You notice a prominent radio tower right on the far shore, at a bearing of 115 degrees. You drive on for 2 miles and notice that now the radio tower appears at a bearing of 55 degrees. You figure that at this point the Mississippi river is -------- miles wide. Round to two decimal places.arrow_forwardMY NOTES ASK YOUR TEACHER Two geological field teams are working in a remote area. A global positioning system (GPS) tracker at their base camp shows the location of the first team as 36 km away, 18° north of west, and the second team as 31 km away, 33° east of north. When the first team uses its GPS to check the position of the second team, what does the GPS give for the following? (a) the second team's distance from the first team 51.38 X km (b) the second team's direction from the first team, measured relative to due east o north of due east v Additional Materials eBook P Type here to search 9 College Physics I: C. - A helicopter starts from an airport and takes the route described. The plane first flies to city A, located 175km away in a direction 30.0o north of east. Next, it flies for 150km 20.0o west of north, to city B. Finally, the plane flies 190 km due west, to city C. Find the distance of city C relative to starting point. (Write your final answer in 3 significant figures, include the unit in your final answer)arrow_forwardAstronomers need to identify the position of objects in the sky with very high precision. For that, it is essential to have coordinate systems that specify the position of an object at a given time. One of them is the equatorial coordinate system that is widely used in astronomy. (a) Explain how the equatorial coordinate system works. (b) What is the meaning of J2000 that often occurs together with equatorial coordinates? The object NGC 4440 is a galaxy located in the Virgo Cluster at the following equatorial coordi- nates (J2000): 12h 27m 53.6° (right ascension), 12° 17'36" (declination). The Calar Alto Observatory is located in Spain at the geographical coordinates 37.23°N and 2.55°W. (c) Is the NGC 4440 galaxy observable from the Calar Alto Observatory?arrow_forwardOn the map, let the +x-axis point east and the +y-axis north. An airplane flies at 880 km/h northwestward direction (i.e., midway between north and west). Can you help me visualize the components of the first velocity, and when the plane flies due south at the same velocity. I understand the answer will be -622.25 for the run, meaning 880*cos(45) for x -axis; the y axis north is 880*sin(45) resulting in 622.5 Please help me visualize the first and second velocity when the plane flies due south at the same velocity?  Help me to visualize where one of the velocities due south is zero, and the other is whatever it is.  I am afraid I can properly visualize or understand in simple terms what is asked.  My point can you help to understand the right angle theorem to the angle.arrow_forward
