Chapter 1, Problem 24P

Suppose a genotype for a protein-producing gene can have any combination of three alleles, A1, A2, and A3.

List all the possible genotypes involving these three alleles.

Each allele produces a protein with a distinct electrophoretic mobility. Allele A1 has the highest electrophoretic mobility. Allele A3 has the lowest electrophoretic mobility, and the electrophoretic mobility of A2 is intermediate between them. Draw the appearance of gel electrophoresis protein bands for each of the possible genotypes. Be sure to label each lane of the gel with the corresponding genotype.

The protein encoded by the cystic fibrosis gene is 1480amino acids long, yet the gene spans 250 kb. How is thisdifference possible?
Gene Interaction and Epistasis Hair color is due to the presence of melanin. There are two types of melanin produced by melanocytes. One is eumelanin, which is responsible for black (homozygous), brown (heterozygous), and blond (recessive) hair colors. The other is pheomelanin, which is responsible for red hair color. During melanin synthesis, MCR1gene converts pheomelanin to eumelanin. However, a variant of the MCR1 gene (MCR1variant), prevents this conversion.   A cross between a blond-haired mother and a red-haired father produced 100% brown-haired children. When they came of age, one child married a double heterozygote, and both were blessed with 7 children; 2 with black hair, 2 with brown hair, 1 with blond hair, and 2 with red hair. Using the 7-step method, determine the genotypes of the P1, the F1, and the F2s. BOX your answers (if handwritten) or HIGHLIGHT your answers (if encoded).     STEP 1: ________________________________________________________ STEP 2:…
Determine which statements could be used as evidence to support the argument that "DNA influences the proteins that are made" and which statements are just facts. [Select all that apply.] The HBB gene that makes beta-globin has several abnormal alleles, including HbS, HbC, and HbE. Sickle cell disease has been successfully treated using bone marrow transplantation in children and adults. The symptoms of sickle cell anemia may not appear in individuals who only carry one HbS allele, but are always apparent when both alleles are HbS. If oxygen is removed from red blood cells made by two HbS alleles, the cell will form a sickle shape.
