For this lab, the dominant allele for normal fur pigmentation (gray) is represented by G and the recessive allele for leucistic pigmentation is represented by g. Squirrels that inherit two G alleles (homozygous dominant) or one G and one g allele (heterozygous) have normal pigmentation, while squirrels that inherit two gs (homozygous recessive) have leucistic pigmentation.
Due to the difficulty of leucisitc squirrels to camouflage themselves against predators, in each generation, 50% of the gg individuals will die off from predation before they can reach maturity. This means they will not be able to pass their genes on to the next generation.
Bipedalism has many selective advantages. However, there is one disadvantage to walking on two feet: giving birth to an offspring with a large head through a small pelvic opening, which is necessitated by an upright posture, is very difficult. This situation results in a high percentage of deaths (for mother and child) during birth compared to primates. How do you explain the selection of a trait that is both positive and negative?
