You are applying for a position with a sea rescue unit and are taking the qualifying exam. One question on the exam is about the use of a diving bell. The diving bell is in the shape of a cylinder with a vertical length of L = 2.50 m. It is closed at the upper circular end and open at the lower circular end. The bell is lowered from air into seawater (ρ = 1.025 g/cm3) and kept in its upright orientation as it is lowered. The air in the bell is initially at temperature Ti = 20.0°C. The bell, with two humans inside, is lowered to a
depth (measured to the bottom of the bell) of 27.0 fathoms, or h = 49.4 m. At this depth the water temperature is Tf = 4.0°C, and the bell is in thermal equilibrium with the water. The exam question asks you to compare two situations: (i) No additional gas is added to the interior of the bell as it is submerged. Therefore, water enters the open bottom of the bell and the volume of the enclosed air decreases. (ii) The bell is fitted with pressurized air tanks, which deliver high-pressure air into the interior of the bell to keep
the level of water at the bottom edge of the bell. This choice requires money and effort to attach the tanks. The exam question asks: Which scenario is better?

- A tall, open container is full of glycerine. At what depth h below the surface of the glycerine is the pressure 2210 Pa greater than atmospheric pressure? The density of glycerine is 1.26 × 10° kg/m³. h =arrow_forwardA lost shipping container is found resting on the ocean floor and completely submerged. The container is 6.3 m long, 2.9 m wide, and 2.9 m high. Salvage experts attach a spherical balloon to the top of the container and inflate it with air pumped down from the surface. When the balloon's radius is 1.6 m, the shipping container just begins to rise towards the surface. What is the mass of the container? Ignore the mass of the balloon and the air within it. Do not neglect the buoyant force exerted on the shipping container by the water. The density of seawater is 1025 kg/m³. The spool has an inner diameter of 3.00 cm and an outer diameter of 18.0 cm, and a mass of 100 g. The strand has a length of 16.0 cm. The monofilament line has a linear density of 10.0 g/m. 16.0 cm- Need Help? 3.00 cm (a) When switched on, the trimmer speeds up from 0 to 2.500 rev/min in 0.225 s. What average power (in W) is delivered to the head by the trimmer motor while it is accelerating? (Round your answer to at least one decimal place.) -18.0 cm- (b) When the trimmer is cutting weeds, it spins at 2,100 rev/min and the weeds exert an average tangential force of 9.15 N on the outer end of the line, which is still at a radial distance of 16.0 cm from the outer edge of the spool. What is the power (in W) delivered to the head under load? W Readarrow_forward
- A group of acrobats forms a human tower, each standing on the shoulders of another acrobat. The acrobats have mass 61.7 kg, 76.3 kg, 65.8 kg, and 52.1 kg. The most massive acrobat is on the bottom. The bottom acrobat’s shoes have a total surface area of 0.0009 m2 on their soles. A pipe is connected to the tank at the upper end and is open to the air at the lower end (see figure). The upper end of the pipe is h1 = 1.90-m above the ground. The lower end of the pipe is h2 = 0.570-m above the ground. The water at the upper end of the pipe has a speed of 0.640 m/s. The water at the lower end of the pipe has a speed of 8.50 m/s.What is the pressure in the water in the pipe at the upper end of the pipe?arrow_forwardOn another planet that you are exploring, a large tank is open to the atmosphere and contains ethanol. A horizontal pipe of cross-sectional area 7.0×10−4m27.0×10−4m2 has one end inserted into the tank just above the bottom of the tank. The other end of the pipe is open to the atmosphere. The viscosity of the ethanol can be neglected. You measure the volume flow rate of the ethanol from the tank as a function of the depth hh of the ethanol in the tank. If you graph the volume flow rate squared as a function of hh, your data lie close to a straight line that has slope 2.09×10−5m5/s22.09×10−5m5/s2.
