Question

To interpret the above pedigree, there are some pedigree rules that you need to know.

  1. Squares are males, and circles are females.
  2. Horizontal lines connecting shapes in the middle indicate that two individuals have offspring together.
  3. Vertical lines indicate a parent-offspring relationship.
  4. Siblings are connected with a horizontal line *above* the shapes (check out Susie's brother and Susie for an example).

There is some additional information that you need for these cats.

  1. Susie has a pink nose (the dominant condition).
  2. Susie's father also has a pink nose.
  3. Susie's brother has a gray nose (the recessive condition).
  4. Susie and "Susie's 1st partner" had one kitten, and that kitten had a gray nose.
  5. Fred has a pink nose.
  6. Fred's father has a gray nose.
  7. Fred's mother and her parents are all homozygous dominant for pink noses.

ACTIVITY 8.2: Pedigree Analysis
To understand pedigree analysis, there are a few things that are helpful to know. Squares
Horizontal lines
are chromosomal males and circles are chromosomal females.
connecting two individuals in the middle indicate the two individuals have offspring
together. Vertical lines indicate a parent-offspring relationship. Siblings are connected
with a horizontal line above the shapes - look at Susie and Susie's brother for an example
below. There is a helpful Amoeba Sister's video on Canvas posted for you to view as
well.
After carefully studying generation after generation of cats, a monk living in a High Sierra
retreat found the trait of "pink noses" (N) is dominant while the trait for "grey noses" (n) is
recessive. Susie was a pink-nosed female cat whose father also showed this trait. Susie's
brother, however, had a grey nose. Susie also had two mates in her life. She first mated
with a male cat that resulted in one grey-nosed kitten. After that, she mated with Fred, a
pink-nosed male cat whose father was grey-nosed, and whose mother was purebred for
pink-noses. Use the following pedigree chart to help understand Susie's pedigree and to
answer the questions on Canvas for this activity.
