Question
In general terms, please describe how to carry out a recrystallization. Just give the steps that should be used to recrystallize something.
Expert Solution
Step 1
Recrystallization is a slow process by which a solid organic compound can be purified. In this process, an impure solid compound is dissolved in a particular solvent. When the solution is allowed to cool, it crystallizes out as pure solid. The principle of recrystallization is that the amount of solute which can be dissolved by a solvent increases with temperature.
Step 2
In-order to do recrystallization, certain steps has to be followed.
- First, a suitable solvent has to be selected and the impure solid has to be dissolved in a small amount of hot solvent.
- By the process of filtration, insoluble impurities can be removed. By cooling the hot solution, the pure solid will crystallise out from the solution.
- The solution can be filter to separate the purified solid compound.
