Question
How does the discovery of Epigenetics change our views from Gregor Mendel and Jean Baptiste Lamarck?
Expert Solution
Step 1

Epigenetics is the study of how your behavior and environment can cause changes that affect the way your genes work. Epigenetic changes are modifications to DNA that regulate whether genes are turned on or off. These modifications do not change the DNA sequence, but instead, they affect how cells "read" genes.

Lamarck reasoned that if an organism changes to better adapt to its environment, these changes would be passed on to its offspring, and this would explain changes over generations. Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection and Gregor Mendel's genetics, which demonstrated how random mutations, not adaptive changes, generate diversity, eventually disproved him.
