Question

Compare and contrast the following methods of a passing cell membrane in terms of movement with respect to the concentration gradient, use of ATP, and the use of transporters with examples.

  • (Simple) diffusion vs Facilitated diffusion
Expert Solution
Step 1

Simple and facilitated diffusion are the two types of diffusion. Diffusion is the process of movement of substances from the region of their higher concentration to that of their lower ones.

Step 2

Simple diffusion transports the substances from the region of their higher concentration to that of their lower ones, that is, down the concentration gradient. Facilitated diffusion also transports the substances down the concentration gradient.

Therefore, both simple and facilitated diffusion is similar to each other for the concentration gradient.

Step 3

Since both simple and facilitated diffusion moves the substances down the concentration gradient, these two processes do not use the energy of ATP in moving the substances. Rather, the energy of the concentration gradient drives both the processes.
