- Case Study for Overweight/Obesity – Lynn
This client is a female 58 years old, nonsmoker. She drinks on average two standard drinks a day, but because of a menopausal middle, is cutting back to just the weekends. Lynn walks or does an exercise class on most days during the week for about 30 minutes each day. She has no history of cardiovascular disease. Her family history shows no history of cardiovascular disease, other than a tendency towards hypertension. She got a blood panel done because she wants to take better care of herself and needs an exercise prescription. Her main goal is general fitness and to lose the menopausal middle. She is frustrated because her current walks and workouts have only shown a weight loss of 4 lb. She wants to lose about 15 more. She has come to your facility where you are doing your internship. Your supervisor assigns this client to you to work with, and here is her information:
Height: 5’4” Weight: 167 lbs Waist Circumference: 37.5 inches
Glucose: 109 mg/dL Triglycerides: 152 mg/dL
Cholesterol: 200 mg/dL HDL: 42 mg/dL LDL:128 mg/dL
BP: 132/86 HR: 73
- Calculate her BMI: __________
- Identify her risk factors (ACSM) – Remember the 8 risk factors from ACSM
- Also state separately here her risks for
Metabolic Syndrome – does she have the syndrome?
Recommendations and Special Considerations:
What will you focus on with her workouts, and what considerations will you include based on her risk factors you identified, as well as her personal wish to lose more weight?
Create a target heart rate range for Lynn to use a way to prescribe intensity.
NOTE: you do not have a max test so use an age-predicted max to generate this range.

George is a 48-year-old IT specialist. His days are very busy, and he barely has time to eat lunch most days. He has recently been told he has Type 2 diabetes, with high fasting values confirmed with an oral glucose tolerance test.
George’s doctor wants to work with him on lifestyle modification in hopes of preventing him having to take medication. He has a BMI of 31 and is currently walking his dog about two times per week with no symptoms or problems but does not push himself very hard as the dog is quite old and mainly goes out to sniff and enjoy being outside.
- He has clearance from his physician to begin moderate exercise. Please make a FITT plan for him and also state what specific considerations you need to think of prior to him starting. What would you focus on for him specifically in the DIABETES lecture considerations/FITT principle? Please do not copy and paste the FITT from this area, but state what you note is important to remember.
- His glucose level before your exercise session is 77 mg/dl. He says he did not have time for lunch and is now at your center at 3PM.
How would you proceed? Remember he is new to having diabetes and new to more regular exercise.
