Expert Solution
Step 1

The balanced equation of a reaction has balanced charges and number of atoms on both the sides of equation. The total ionic equation represents the ions present in the reaction whereas the net ionic equation shows only the ions taking part in reaction.

Step 2

(a) Barium hydroxide and sulfuric acid

When barium hydroxide reacts with sulfuric acid, barium sulfate and water are produced.

The molecular equation is as follows,

H2SO4(aq)+ Ba(OH)2(aq)  BaSO4(s) + H2O(l)

The balanced equation is as follows,

H2SO4(aq)+ Ba(OH)2(aq)  BaSO4(s) +2 H2O(l)

The total ionic equation is as follows,

2H+(aq) + SO42-(aq) + Ba2+(aq) + 2OH-(aq)  BaSO4(s)+ 2H2O(l)

No spectator ions are present. Hence, the total ionic equation is same as net ionic equation.

The net ionic equation is as follows,

2H+(aq) + SO42-(aq) + Ba2+(aq) + 2OH-(aq)  BaSO4(s)+ 2H2O(l)
