Chapter 6
Miss Garber likes Jamie and Landon’s idea of performing for the orphans. She, however, insists that the entire cast should do so. Jamie then tells Landon that they need to meet Mr Jenkins, the director of the orphanage, about the performance. On their way, Jamie stops by Landon’s home and is astonished by its size and grandeur.
On their way to the orphanage, Landon and Jamie discuss their future. Jamie suggests that Landon should become a minister since he speaks so well and has a good heart. Landon, for his part, finds the suggestion “ridiculous.” Jamie reveals that her dream is to get married and have her father walk her down the aisle. Landon is surprised that Jamie is not more ambitious than this.
Landon and Jamie arrive at the orphanage and speak to Mr Jenkins. Mr Jenkins rejects their idea to perform the play there; he reminds them that the subject matter might sadden the orphans. He, however, invites them to celebrate Christmas at the orphanage and exchange gifts with the kids. Jamie then gives Landon a tour of the orphanage and confides in him that she’s sad that they are unable to perform for them.
In this chapter, we see a more realistic version of Jamie, one where she is not always happy and optimistic. We see the extent of her love and care for orphans too. Her reaction upon seeing Landon’s house highlights the disparity between her and Landon’s life.
