Chapter 2
Landon discusses his college options. His father wants him to attend an Ivy League university, but Landon knows that his grades are only high enough for him to be accepted at the University of North Carolina. With the aim of improving Landon’s college application, Worth suggests that Landon should run for the post of school president. Although reluctant initially, Landon finally decided to stand for the election. With his best friend Eric’s help, Landon is able to secure the athletes’ votes and eventually wins the election.
Once elected, Landon’s first task is to organise and attend the Homecoming Dance. He did not want to be the only student body president in history to be without a date at the Homecoming Dance, so he started exploring his options. When he realises that Carey Dennison, elected treasurer, is also looking for a date, he decides to pursue this more proactively.
Initially, he did not want to ask Jamie because he thinks that his friends will ridicule him for it. However, unable to secure any other date, he decides to approach Jamie. He goes to Jamie’s house and nervously asks her out. Although surprised, she agrees, with one condition: Landon must promise not to fall in love with her.
This chapter gives us more details about Landon’s relationship with his father. Landon is unable to fulfil the expectations his father has of him. He does, however, give in and decides to stand for the student body elections. The reader also learns about how Landon and Jamie get acquainted. Jamie comes across as someone who values herself and is not merely flattered when Landon approaches her for the dance.
