The prolonged spell of torture that had once seemed endless to Winston does end after all. Winston is finally treated better and given good food. He even gains some weight. However, the impulse to rebel seems dead in him. It seems as though he is ready to accept the Party’s version of reality. However, after he wakes up from a dream involving Julia, he realizes that he still resists the Party, but only faintly. While he is prepared to obey the Party’s orders, he still cannot love it. He confesses to O’Brien that he cannot hide this last, feeble streak of resistance in him.
