William Herschel was a musician and an astronomer. The motivation that drove William Herschel to the discovery of Uranus was his obsession with astronomy and the heavens. He charted the stars with a telescope he built himself, he then discovered a “comet” which really was the planet Uranus, but he initially didn’t realize it. I think one of the most shocking things about the discovery of Uranus was that William Herschel wasn’t even a professional astronomer, he was actually a musician. He did have an interest in astronomy on the side which is what led him to discover Uranus. He built many telescopes and he found the planet in one that he had built himself and at first he thought it was a comet. After studying it for many days, alongside many other astronomers, he discovered it wasn’t a comet at all. The discovery of Uranus is quite interesting. William Herschel discovered Uranus one day while he was admiring the stars in the sky in 1781. He noticed that one of these stars happened to be quite different than the other ones. He began is research there. His motivation came from the difference in the star from the other ones. Plus, he had built his telescope himself and I am sure he needed many reasons to use it!

There wasn’t so much a motivation for a specific discovery when Herschel discovered Uranus. It seems like most inventions and discoveries it was on accident. Herschel was actually an organist and conductor but this musician also had a hobby. He made his own telescopes and would search the stars in his free time. Herschel discovered Uranus on March 13, 1781. According to Smith it was the, “first planet to be discovered in recorded history.” That must have made a big impact in the astronomical community. This was only the start of this international debate, Le Verrier had contacted the London Guardian, a local news group, about the accusations and stated that, “When he scrupled not to put into print that my calculations were not sufficient to command his confidence, did he not perceive that he was bringing discredit on his own scientific penetration, when he attacked a calculation … Among men of science of different countries, there ought to remain only that friendly rivalry, which, as leading to the benefit of science, so far from hindering, does but cement, the frank and brotherly friendship of those who cultivate it.” (Le Verrier, 1846a). To this, Herschel had responded saying that, “The prize (the discovery of Neptune) was by all rules accredited to Le Verrier since his research was documented and brought to light before Adams discovery”. Almost seeming to assure the people of France that Le Verrier was sure to be given credit to the discovery, however Herschel meant nothing of the sort. He himself wrote directly to the editor of The Guardian stating, “These Frenchmen fly at one like wildcats.” (Herschel, 1846a).

William Herschel began looking into the heavens as a hobby, he worked regularly in music and only dabbled in astrology in his free time. He was frustrated with the inability to see things as clearly as he liked and it led him to develop a better telescope than was available at the time. He worked and created a better scope and by that was able to study the stars and five planets. The planets did not interest him as much as how the stars and such are formed. His main interests were in how things were created. He studied the clusters of stars. As he was able to see better and was able to chart the things he saw, he was able to notice and take note of Uranus. In the beginning, he believed it to be a comet, and reported it to astrologers in England. Their equipment was insufficient to see the “comet”. As they continued to watch they could document that it was indeed not a comet.

The following is not a biblical story, but one I find applicable in my walk with God and community with humanity. The response is that helping that one was important for that one. The following Psalms are supportive of the idea that I have a responsibility to share God to those around me. I can use Psalms to show the progression from creation to attitude and hope while also sharing the story of Christ. Most important to me is the ability to share through my actions that lead to conversations. These three Psalms give me a base to work from as I mature into the adult I hope to become.
