The discovery of Uranus is quite interesting. William Herschel discovered Uranus one day while he was admiring the stars in the sky in 1781. He noticed that one of these stars happened to be quite different than the other ones. He began is research there. His motivation came from the difference in the star from the other ones. Plus, he had built his telescope himself and I am sure he needed many reasons to use it! Herschel then began to ask questions. He would ask himself “why is that star different from all of the others. That was his original question that got him going on his experiment. He was determined to find out what was different about that star. He then began to ask questions such as “Does it move? Born in Germany as Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel, it wasn’t until his was 30 when he discovered what his true passion was. One night while he was looking at the night sky with his sister Caroline, he discovered Uranus and several of moons around other gas giants. While he was alive, he compiled a catalogue of 2,500 celestial objects that are still being used in today’s society. While in his early life he mainly studied music with his sister. His sister, Caroline was the first women to discover a comet, and the first women to get given a paid scientific position and to receive an honorary membership into the Royal Society. Herschel just happened to be studying the stars between 10-11pm. What he did not expect was to find a planet on that fateful night. Herschel thought that what he had spotted was a big star, but then decided that it was a comet. However, he quickly realized that this was no star, it was much more! In this situation, technology made all the difference. Without these high-powered magnifiers, it would have been easily forgotten. In March of 1781 William Herschel, a musician and amateur astronomer discovered what would eventually be called “Uranus.” He discovered what he initially thought was a comet, while looking for what he called double stars. He ended up finding Uranus as it passed by one of the stars he was looking at. He recorded is in a journal, and after a few days looked for it again. He was able to see that it was moving and that it appeared to have an orbit. He contacted some friends of his that were astronomers and gave them the work that had done and wanted to them to explore it further than he could. I think one of the most shocking things about the discovery of Uranus was that William Herschel wasn’t even a professional astronomer, he was actually a musician. He did have an interest in astronomy on the side which is what led him to discover Uranus. He built many telescopes and he found the planet in one that he had built himself and at first he thought it was a comet. The use of the telescope led him to discover new characteristics of space and the solar system. He discovered Jupiter’s four largest moons and the rings of Saturn. He also discovered that the Milky Way galaxy is comprised of stars. The observation of mountains on the moon was made by Galileo as well. He also made numerous discoveries within these discoveries.
For example, the Mariner 2 flew past Venus in 1962 and we were able to gain information that Venus has extremely hot temperatures. Another example is Mariner 9 in 1971. This mission was the first to successful complete a full orbit around Mars and allowed to snap a picture at one of the largest Volcanoes in the Solar System. These probes we have sent out allow us to discover these properties more in depth and make adjustments on future probes that we plan to set out. We have
